Rugs That Tell Stories: Discover the Functional Art of Laurel Anderson
In the heart of Costa Rica, an American artist discovered the inspiration not just to transform her own life, but to redefine how we see—and use—rugs. Laurel Anderson, founder of Laurel’s Originals, has dedicated over 20 years to creating hand-painted canvas rugs that not only beautify spaces but also protect and personalize homes and businesses worldwide.
✨ From Backpacker to Successful Artist-Entrepreneur
Laurel’s journey began 48 years ago when she arrived in Costa Rica as a backpacker. She fell in love with the country, its people, and eventually, her future husband. Together, they launched an export business in the heart of Costa Rica. Yet it was Laurel’s creativity that led her to solve a practical problem: how to protect the wooden floors in their home.
That’s how Laurel’s Originals was born—functional works of art that have captured hearts in Costa Rica and beyond.
“When I arrived in Costa Rica 48 years ago as a backpacker, I never imagined this would be the place where I would start my business,” Laurel shares. “I began painting clothing for boutiques in the 80s. Later, trying to protect the wooden floors in my home in Cahuita, I discovered hand-painted canvas rugs.”
One-of-a-Kind Creations for Unique Spaces
Each rug Laurel creates is fully customized. Her artistic process always begins with understanding the client’s space and needs. Whether it’s a piece for a bedroom, hallway, or even a kitchen island, she designs any shape or size.
“For spaces spanning multiple rooms, I integrate elements from each to create a cohesive work of art,” says Laurel. “I also love adding personal touches like names or meaningful details, as I did for a client whose rug featured her garden, dogs, and architectural elements from her home.”
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Successes
Laurel’s path hasn’t been without obstacles. One major challenge was educating people about canvas rugs—a concept unfamiliar to many. At one point, changes in canvas quality led her to import higher-grade canvas from the U.S. and India.
Despite the hurdles, Laurel’s achievements are remarkable:
“One of my biggest accomplishments was creating 13 rugs for a condominium in Nosara, which led me to work with the owner of Manchebo Beach Resort in Aruba. I even created rugs for his house in Florida!”
Functional Art for Homes and Businesses
Laurel’s rugs are both beautiful and practical. They’re easier to maintain than traditional rugs, can serve as statement pieces in a room’s design, and blend seamlessly with any décor style while offering durability and easy care.
“Canvas rugs can be the focal point of a room, or simply a practical, low-maintenance option,” Laurel explains.
Laurel’s Advice for Entrepreneurs
“My biggest advice is to be patient and flexible. Costa Rica is a small place, and business ideas can shift based on available resources. Honesty, generosity, and trust are essential. If you’re honest, people will speak well of you—and success will follow.”
